Ask—Don’t Always Answer

As parents and caregivers, our instinct is to jump in and fix things the moment a problem pops up. Missing shoes? We look under the couch. Sibling argument? We break it up. Homework frustration? We start giving solutions.

But what if the best way to help our kids grow is to help them think?

One simple shift can make a big difference:

Instead of solving every problem for your child, try asking:

“What do you think we should do about this?”

This tiny question does something powerful—it hands the mental “work” back to your child, gently inviting them to slow down, think it through, and come up with a plan.

Why This Matters

Kids develop resilience, confidence, and independence by practicing problem-solving—not by watching adults do all the thinking for them.

And it doesn’t take a major life moment to teach these skills.
Even everyday challenges offer opportunities to grow:

  • A disagreement with a sibling
  • A toy that won’t work the way they want
  • A forgotten assignment
  • A missing shoe as you’re rushing out the door

When you ask guiding questions instead of giving immediate answers, you help your child learn how to calm their frustration, break a problem down, and come up with solutions on their own.

The Long-Term Payoff

Kids who are encouraged to think through challenges become:

  • More confident in their abilities
  • Better at handling stress
  • More independent and persistent
  • Stronger communicators
  • Better equipped to face bigger decisions later in life

They don’t just follow rules—they understand why they make choices and how to navigate bumps in the road.

You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

At White County Family Connection, we believe that empowered children begin with supported parents.

Our programs—from family advocacy to mentoring to community resource support—are designed to help families grow problem-solvers, not just rule-followers. When parents have tools, encouragement, and a strong community around them, kids thrive.

If you’re looking for more tips, resources, or support, we’re here to walk alongside you—one Family Friday at a time.
